Why the Hot Water Calls Keep Coming

The mid-century stock is hitting the age where everything lets go

Much of the housing dates from the 1960s to the 1980s, brick veneer around the old centre, and the original cylinders and copper pipework in those places are now failing from age alone. A 40-year-old tank usually dies without warning, and a house with young kids feels it that same night.

The growth end brings the opposite problem

Census figures put the dwelling count at 4,834, with another 679 approved in the five years before that count, much of it in the newer estates. Everything in a young estate is new until the day it is not, and the first hot water call there is usually a valve or a warranty-age unit, not a worn-out tank.

Replacement is where the choice matters

Area-level figures show 1,413 heat pump and 1,436 solar hot water installs in this suburb, so plenty of households here have already moved past plain electric storage. We price each system type side by side, and a temporary hot water tank can go in while the replacement is on order.

How the Price Works Before We Start

Whatever you approve at the door is what the invoice shows, and nothing starts before you approve it.

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

Four things shape the price:

  • Getting at it A cylinder in a tight laundry, or a pipe under the floor or up in the ceiling
  • Pipe material Old clay and galvanised lines need different gear from PVC and copper
  • Parts Anything from a tap washer to a whole hot water system
  • Timing Because the call-out offer excludes after-hours visits

When we're not the right call. A fault in the home's wiring needs an electrician, and a cracked slab or a leaning retaining wall is work for a builder.

Your Call, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4915 2998 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

    The work itself

With the van's gear, the job is cleared, repaired or installed, then water runs through and every joint gets checked before we leave.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Flat Ground, Big Storms, Hard-Worked Drains

Flat ground gives stormwater nowhere to run

This is Hunter River country, low and level, and in parts of the suburb the water table stays high and pushes into ageing joints. When a heavy summer downpour hits, yards around the older streets can flood before the drains catch up.

The drainage reserve was built for this

The McKeachies Run Drainage Reserve is a built wetland holding stormwater back before it reaches the river, sitting upstream of the homes it protects. The streets between it and the old centre carry the overflow when a big storm hits, so a stormwater pit that fills after every downpour deserves attention before the water comes inside.

Before You Ring: Common Questions

What does it cost to get you out to my place?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). Once the plumber has seen the fault, you get a set price and the choice to go ahead or not.

How do you know a drain is actually cleared?

We put the camera down before any clearing, so we can see whether it is tree roots in an old clay sewer or grease in a kitchen line, and we run it again afterwards to show you the line is properly clear.

What hot water systems can you install?

Electric storage, instant electric, gas storage, continuous-flow gas, heat pump and solar. If your old unit dies before the new one arrives, we can fit a temporary hot water tank so the house is not without hot water.

Is your gas work licensed?

Yes. Cooktop hookups, heater points and leak repairs are all handled by licensed gas fitters, who also carry out any plumbing on the same job. Every gas job carries our 365-day warranty on all work once it is done.

Is a blocked sewer my problem or the water authority's?

The sewer line on your side of the boundary is yours, and that is the part we clear, camera and reline. If the fault sits in the authority's main, you report it to them, with our camera footage showing where it sits.

Do you cover Aberglasslyn and Telarah?

Yes. Aberglasslyn, Oakhampton, Oakhampton Heights, Telarah, Farley and Windella all sit on the same run as Rutherford, with the same crew and the same standard.
