Blocked Sewer Rutherford

A blocked sewer stops every drain in the house at once, and a plumber in Rutherford clears it with the camera down first so you know exactly what caused it. The price is set before the clear starts, and the line is confirmed clean on camera before we leave. Ring (02) 4915 2998 to book.

Signs It Is the Sewer, Not One Fixture

One slow sink is a fixture problem. A sewer blockage shows itself across the whole house:

  • Several drains slow down or back up together, the low points of the house first
  • Water rises in the shower or floor waste when the washing machine drains
  • Gullies in the yard overflow or surcharge after the laundry runs
  • A sewage smell outside near the boundary traps, worse in warm weather

If the toilets gurgle when the bath empties, that is the shared line telling you it is loaded. The drains hub covers the milder end of this; a surcharging sewer belongs on this page.

Why Do Sewers Block on This Ground?

Two things make sewer work common around here, and both come with the suburb's age and geography.

Old clay and mature trees

The post-war streets were sewered in clay pipe that cracks as the ground moves. Street trees planted decades ago find those joints and push fine roots in, and the roots catch paper and debris until the line plugs.

Groundwater on the flats

The suburb sits on low Hunter River alluvial ground, so groundwater runs high and infiltrates older pipework. A line can look fully blocked when part of the load is infiltration rather than a solid plug, which is why we look before we clear.

How We Clear a Sewer Line

Camera first

The camera goes in at the boundary trap or an inspection opening, locating the choke and showing the state of the pipe, so we bring the right method instead of guessing.

Clear the line

Depending on what the footage shows, that is the jetter for roots and flushed-in debris, or the electric eel to cut through a solid obstruction.

Confirm on camera

A second pass shows the line running clean and shows us anything the blockage was hiding, like a cracked clay joint that will keep catching roots.

Quote what comes next

If the pipe itself is damaged, we talk through pipe relining or a repair, and price that separately before anything further happens.

What Drives the Price of a Sewer Clear?

"[The team] fixed my blocked sewer connection quickly and on budget. Good guys, polite, tidy and prompt." Richard

On a sewer, depth and what is jammed in the line set most of the price:

  • Depth and access Since a buried or paved-over inspection opening has to be uncovered first
  • Pipe material Because brittle old clay is cleared more gently than PVC
  • What is in the line Since a solid root mat needs cutting heads, while a grease plug usually jets straight out
  • Repair work If the camera shows a cracked or collapsed section beyond the clear itself

When we're not the right call. Past your property, the line joins the street sewer, and a choke in that main is Hunter Water's to clear. You report it to them, and our footage shows where it sits.

Sewer Work on This Ground

The old core

Streets like Regiment Road hold the suburb's oldest sewer stock: clay pipe laid when the post-war homes went up, with mature street trees above it. Roots work into the joints, and the high water table on these alluvial flats loads the lines from outside as well.

The newer estates

Out through the growth areas that spread from the 1990s, the lines are PVC and the blockages come from grease, wipes and sanitary items instead. Same symptom, different cause, which is why the camera decides the method rather than a guess.

If a sewer backs up outside business hours, the emergency plumbing page covers how after-hours calls run. When the footage shows a street tree's roots through a joint, tree root removal is the follow-up that stops the regrowth.

Blocked Sewer Questions

Is a sewer blockage in Rutherford an emergency?

It can be. If sewage is surcharging through a gully or backing up inside the house, ring straight away, day or night. A single slow fixture can hold until a booked visit, but a main line that will not drain at all will not fix itself.

Do the older streets around Rutherford run clay sewer pipes?

Many of the post-war homes near the original core were sewered in vitrified clay, and those joints are where roots get in. The newer estates out west run PVC, where blockages are more often grease, wipes and silt than root intrusion.

Will you show me what caused the blockage?

Yes. The camera runs before clearing so you see the cause, and again afterwards to confirm the line is clean. If a repair is needed, you see the damaged section on screen before we price it.

Can you clear a sewer without digging up the yard?

Most of the time, yes. Jetting or an electric eel clears the blockage from an access point, and a cracked clay section can then be relined in place, so the lawn stays intact.
