What Are the Warning Signs?

Gas usually announces itself before anything worse happens. Check for these:

  • A sulphur or rotten-egg smell indoors that fades and returns, worst at the stove, heater or meter box
  • Cooktop flames showing yellow or orange when they should burn a clean blue
  • A faint hiss near a pipe, fitting or appliance with everything switched off
  • Headaches or dizziness that ease once you step outside
  • Gas usage climbing with no change in your habits

Any one of these earns a check. Several together mean treat it as urgent.

What Should You Do First?

Do not wait for a confirmation. There is a safe order to follow:

  1. 1

Get everyone outside, away from the house.

  2. 2

Leave switches, lights and appliances exactly as they are, because a spark is the danger.

  3. 3

From outside, ring the gas network's emergency line if the smell is strong or sudden, then ring (02) 4915 2998 for the detection and repair side.

  4. 4

Keep clear until the line is tested or the network gives the all-clear.

A big leak is the network's emergency first and our repair job second. Both numbers matter.

How We Trace a Leak You Cannot See

Gas work never gets guessed at. The job runs in a fixed order:

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4915 2998 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Shut off and trace

We isolate the supply at the meter, pressure-test the line, then follow it with gas detectors until the fault is pinned to one joint.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

The fix is usually cutting out the failed section and fitting new pipe, followed by a retest of the whole line before the supply is restored. Where the fault hides behind brickwork or under floorboards, the trace comes first, so any opening we need to make is small and deliberate.

What Moves the Price on This Job?

The size of the repair sets most of the price:

  • Which side of the meter the fault is on, since mains work before the meter is the network's responsibility, not yours
  • How much line needs replacing, because a single failed joint is a shorter job than a corroded run through several rooms
  • Where the leak hides, because pipe inside a wall or under floorboards means more opening-up before the joint is in reach
  • The pressure test and compliance paperwork done before the supply goes back on

Gas Lines Across Two Eras

Older stock, older joints

Much of the gas-era housing near the original core went up between the 1960s and 1980s, and galvanised and copper gas runs of that age corrode at the joints first. A smell that comes and goes around an old heater often traces back to one of those fittings.

The newer streets fail differently

The McKeachie's Run and Hunterview estates went in from the 1990s onward with modern pipe, so a leak out there is more likely a perished appliance connector than the line itself.

Appliance connections sit under gas appliance installation, the club and shop work is covered on our commercial plumbing page, and the wider trade is listed on the gas fitting hub.

When We're Not the Right Call

A leak in the street or on the main before your meter goes to the gas network's emergency line, not to us. A fault inside an appliance still under manufacturer warranty is better handled through the manufacturer, though we can still isolate and test the line feeding it.

Questions Before You Book

Do you find gas leaks in the older brick-veneer homes around Rutherford?

Yes. Houses built from the 1960s to the 1980s near the old core may still have their first gas pipe, and leaks tend to hide at its joints. We pressure-test the line, trace it with gas detectors and replace corroded sections before they fail.

Is a gas smell at the meter my job or the gas network's?

If the smell comes from the main or the pipes upstream of your meter, the gas network handles it through its emergency line. Past the meter, the pipework is ours to trace and repair.

Can you check gas lines in Aberglasslyn and Telarah too?

Yes. Both suburbs are part of our regular run, and a leak trace in Aberglasslyn or a pressure test in Telarah is done exactly as it is here.

Do you repair the leak or just find it?

Both. We locate the fault, name the figure up front, and wait for your go-ahead before starting. The repaired line is pressure-tested again, and it carries our 365-day warranty on all work.
