Rutherford Gas Fitting Services

Not every gas job is the same job. Two of them have their own pages, each with the full method:

Freestanding gas cooker connected in a kitchen

Gas appliance installation

Cooktops, ovens, freestanding ranges, BBQs and pool heaters, fitted, tested and signed off with compliance paperwork. We check the line size before we quote, because an undersized supply shows up later as weak flames.

Gas leak detection

A smell in the kitchen, a hiss near a fitting or a gas bill rising without explanation. We pressure-test, trace with a gas detector and repair the fault from the meter inwards.

What Does a Gas Fitter Cover?

All of this falls under a gas fitter's licence:

  • Cooktop and oven installation, including LPG conversions where the street has no main
  • Gas points for BBQs and outdoor kitchens
  • Pool and spa heater gas connections
  • Gas hot water system installs and repairs, with the system choices set out on the hot water hub
  • Leak detection on the house side of the meter, using a gas detector and pressure tests
  • Repairs to corroded or damaged gas lines, including sections under floors

Gas and plumbing work often overlap on the same job, and the same crew holds both tickets, so one booking covers the lot.

How Do You Know the Gas Needs Attention?

Gas faults give warning signs before they give you a real problem. Act on any of these:

  • A sulphur smell indoors that comes and goes, strongest near the stove or heater
  • Cooktop flames burning yellow or orange instead of blue
  • A hissing sound near a line or appliance, however faint
  • A heater that smells as it lights, or an appliance that shuts itself off repeatedly
  • Bills that climb with no change in how much you cook or heat

A pressure test settles the question quickly. If the line holds pressure, the fault is usually the appliance. If it does not, we trace the leak and quote the repair before touching anything.

Gas Lines on This Ground

The older stock carries its age in the pipe

Much of the suburb is brick veneer from the 1960s through the 1980s, and homes near Reserve Street and the old core may still have the gas pipe and fittings the house was built with.

Low ground works on buried line

This is Hunter River alluvial country, and groundwater sits close under the surface in the lower parts of the suburb. Older buried gas lines in that ground corrode from the outside in, so a line that looks fine at the appliance can be thin where it runs under the house.

The newer estates are a different question

Growth areas built out west since the 1990s were not all laid with a gas main, so plenty of homes out there have never had gas at all. If you are thinking about a cooktop conversion, the first check is whether your street even has the main, and we can answer that before booking a visit.

What Decides the Price of a Gas Job?

Where the line runs and what state it is in drive most of the cost:

  • Access Since a line under a floor or inside a wall means more work than one behind a stove
  • Line condition Because corroded galvanised pipe usually needs replacing in sections, not patching
  • The appliance As a cooktop swap and a pool heater connection are different sized jobs
  • Pressure testing and compliance paperwork Part of every gas job before sign-off

No dollar figures get quoted over the phone. The price comes from seeing the job, and you hear it before work starts.

What Customers Say

We had an urgent gas problem that required immediate attention at our home…on a Friday afternoon. … Identified the issue, fixed and tested
Lee

When we're not the right call: a fault at the gas meter or in the supply pipe under the street is reported to the gas network. An electrical fault inside an appliance needs an electrician. On the phone, we work out with you which of these you have before anyone is booked.

Everything else gas-related in this suburb is on our run, including the adjoining suburbs of Aberglasslyn, Telarah and Farley.

Gas Fitting Questions Before You Book

Can you switch my kitchen from electric to gas?

Yes, if your street has a gas main. We run the new line, convert or fit the cooktop or oven, test everything and issue the compliance paperwork. Where no main reaches your street, LPG bottles are the alternative, and we sort that out on the phone before anyone drives out.

Is a gas leak your job or the gas network's?

The meter and the street main are the gas network's, so faults there go to their emergency number. Every pipe between the meter and your appliances, and the appliances themselves, is ours to find and fix.

Do the newer estates around Rutherford always have gas available?

Not always. Some of the estates that spread west from the 1990s onward went in without a gas main, so homes there run electric or heat pump systems instead. We can tell you quickly which situation your street is in.

What should I do first if I can smell gas inside?

Clear the house of people, don't flick any switches or use appliances, and call the gas network's emergency number once you are well away. Once the supply is off and things are under control, ring us to trace and repair the leak from the meter inwards.
